When is there actually snow in Chile?

The season runs June to September. But altitude matters more than the month, and that changes how you plan the trip.

The short answer: June to September

The ski resorts near Santiago operate those four months. Outside that window the road is still open and the mountains are still beautiful, but there is no snow to walk on at the altitude a day tour reaches.

July and August are the safest bets. June is the start and depends on how much has fallen; September usually has a good accumulated base and longer days.

But altitude rules, not the calendar

The snow line in this part of the Andes sits around 2,400 metres. That is why Santiago, at 570, has no snow while Farellones, at exactly 2,400, does.

The four resorts are stacked: Farellones at 2,400, La Parva at 2,662, El Colorado at 2,750 and Valle Nevado at 3,025. The higher you go, the more reliable the snow and the longer the season. In a doubtful month, climbing 600 metres solves more than waiting two weeks.

How much colder it gets up there

Temperature drops about 6.5 °C for every 1,000 metres you climb. That is physics, not a forecast: there are 2,455 metres between Santiago and Valle Nevado, so roughly 16 degrees less.

In practice: the jacket that works in Santiago will not work up there. And if you are not skiing, rent snow clothing in Santiago the day before rather than buying it — it is considerably cheaper than on the mountain and you go up already dressed.

The busiest month is July, and there is a reason

July is the school holiday in Brazil. It is when most Brazilians travel to the Chilean snow and when the closest resorts fill up, especially Farellones, the easiest one to reach.

If you are travelling in July and want to avoid the crowd, there are two ways out: pick a weekday rather than a Sunday, or go up to Valle Nevado, which is far larger and spreads people out better.

The real risk is not the month: it is the road

The mountain road can close for snowfall or bad weather, and that call belongs to the authorities, not the agency. It does not happen often, but it happens, and it is usually resolved the same day.

That is why snow tours belong early in your trip rather than on the last day: if the road closes, there is still room to reschedule instead of losing the tour.

Farellones, El Colorado, La Parva or Valle Nevado?

All four sit on the same road, one above the other. Here is the real difference between them.

What a day in the snow in Chile really costs

The tour is one part of the spend. Here is every line item, so none of them surprises you up there.

How many days do I need in Santiago?

Three cover the essentials and five let you breathe. But what shapes the itinerary is not the number of days: it is which days of the week.

Is Valparaíso worth it in winter?

Yes, if you are going for the hills and the street art. No, if you are going for the beach. It is a full day, and it helps to know what for.

What documents do I need to enter Chile?

Brazilians need no tourist visa. What does need checking before you leave home is something else.

How much money to bring to Chile, and how to pay

What takes a card, what needs cash, and the costs that appear up the mountain that nobody warns you about.

Is renting a car in Chile worth it?

For the coast and the wineries, yes. For driving up to the ski resorts in winter, no — and not because we sell tours.

What to pack for the Chilean winter

There are 16 degrees between Santiago and Valle Nevado. That, not the forecast, is what decides your suitcase.

Chile with children: which tour works at which age

Five of our tours do not admit under-18s and three more have a minimum age. Better to know now than at the door.

Which neighbourhood to stay in in Santiago?

It depends what kind of trip it is. And on one practical detail: where we can pick you up at five in the morning.

SIM cards, internet and phones in Chile

Three options and all of them work. What is worth knowing is where there is no signal — which is where you will want it.

Is Santiago safe for a tourist?

It is a big capital and behaves like one. What helps is not a yes or a no, but knowing where you are and at what hour.

When is the best time to travel to Chile?

It depends what trip you want. Nine of our 25 tours are winter-only; the other sixteen run all year.
